The Grand Whisky Trail

8 Days / 7 Nights

The aim of this tour is to give you a taste of the two most famous areas for malt whisky, the remote island of Islay on the west coast and Speyside, the home of malt whisky on the eastern side of the Highlands. Throw a stone here and it will land on a distillery. Speyside has everything required for whisky production, from the barley grown on the coastal plains to the rivers and springs which feed the distilleries.

Day One: Starting from Glasgow or Edinburgh, we travel past Loch Lomond and Loch Fyne, famous for its oysters and catch a ferry to Islay. We stop at the distilleries of  Caol Ila or Bunnahabhain.

Day Two: We travel to the southern tip of the island to Ardbeg, a distillery originally run by smugglers. Then to Lagavulin and Laphroaig, where the founder died by falling into one of the vats in 1847.

Day Three: We visit Bruichladdich, Scotland's most westerly distillery, then Bowmore, and the famous Bowmore Vaults. We return by ferry to the mainland and drive along the coast to your overnight stop, overlooked by Britain's tallest mountain, Ben Nevis.

Day Four:  From the Ben Nevis distillery we wind along Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle, one o the largest castles in Scotland. After a short cruise on the home of the legendary monster, we arrive at your hotel in Speyside.

Day Five: The day begins at Speyside Cooperage where you can see skilled coopers practicing their ancient craft. We visit Aberlour and The Macallan distilleries, Speyside's best known heavyweights.

Day Six: Today includes Ballindalloch Castle - one of the most beautiful castles in Scotland and Cardhu. From here we travel to Glenfarclas, where the stills are the biggest in Speyside. At Dufftown, the whisky capital of Scotland and home to Glenfiddich. you visit the famous whisky shop.

Day Seven: On our final day in Speyside, we visit the distilleries of two outstanding malts, Glenmorangie and Glenlivet. Glenlivet is the biggest selling malt in the USA and although it may be considered commonplace, it is a whisky of structure and complexity, with a flowery, peachy style.

Day Eight: On the way back to Edinburgh, you stop at the Dalwhinnie distillery, one of the highest in Scotland at 1073 feet. Then to Blair Castle and in the town of Pitlochry, with the smallest distillery, Edradour, working on a farmhouse scale. Finally, we call in at the Blair Atholl distillery, which traces its origins to 1798
.
