Established in 1826 in the town of Wick, Pulteney Distillery is the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland and at that time was only accessible by sea. The barley was brought in by sea, the Whisky shipped out by boat and many of the distillery workers were also employed as fisherman. During the herring boom of the 19th Century over 10,000 people were employed in the industry; many were coopers making up to 8 barrels each day to hold herring for export to Russia and Germany.
Sadly today the herring industry is no longer part of life in Wick, however Pulteney Distillery continues to operate, distilling one of the finest Highland malts available. During its 12 years of maturation, Old Pulteney has absorbed the sea breeze, creating a distinct flavour and a unique product.
As with all unique whiskies, interest grew in the Distillery and in June 2000 the Old Pulteney Visitor Centre had its prestigious opening. The Visitor centre and shop are housed within the distillery itself in an old maturation warehouse. On completion of a distillery tour one can peruse the Visitor centre, absorbing the history of the distillery and the surrounding area of Wick. The Visitor Centre shop is open to all, selling a wide range of Old Pulteney products plus some interesting little gems.
Old Pulteney is the only Distillery situated in the far North of Scotland's mainland who can hand bottle at source, making it a well worth trip to the Caithness region, never mind the amazing country side that you will find on the way.
