The Bunnahabhain (pronounced Bu-na-ha-venn) Distillery rests peacefully on the sheltered north-eastern coast of Islay, overlooking stunning views out to the Paps of Jura (a range of hills on a sister island). This quietly remote and inoffensive area provides great solitude for all who visit her, an idyllic place for Scotch whisky distillation. It was built late 19th century, in 1881, close to the mouth of the Margadale River, hence the name (Bunnahabhain means 'mouth of the river' from the Gaelic tongue).
The taste is quite unique and different from the traditional smoke-biased Islay single malts - this is owed more to the very lightly peated malted barley used and the water sourced from the Margadale Spring which rises through the fertile green valley only a mile to the north of Bunnahabhain
The distillery has a small but well stocked shop and welcomes visitors wishing to take a guided tour of the site or just to enjoy a sample and perhaps buy some Malt to take home. Four beautiful cottages, tourist board rated three star to let all year round. For details of availability and to obtain brochure, tariff, etc., apply as distillery contact details.
