Kilchoman (pronounced kilhoman) is a farm scale distillery and the first to be built on Islay for 124 years. Kilchoman gives everyone the opportunity to see all that is best in the grass-roots traditions of whisky production - from barley field to bottling room.
The visitor centre tells the story of farm distilling on Islay and gives a background to the historical notion that distilling was introduced to Scotland via Islay and, in particular, Kilchoman. Alex Kraaijveld, a historian, who studied the MacBeatha Hypothesis has come up with some interesting thoughts.
The presence of the Clan MacBeatha in the Kilchoman area is confirmed by a cross dating from the second half of the 14th century, which is located in the church graveyard.
In the 19th century there were as many as 13 farm distilleries on Islay and these were either absorbed into one of the present distilleries or closed as the demand for whisky grew and customs brought in tighter regulations.
