Dalmore Selene 58yo scotch malt whisky.jpg

Press release issued 21st January 2010

The Scotch Whisky Experience is the first place in the world to celebrate the arrival of the highly anticipated Dalmore Selene and Dalmore Candela. These 2 exclusive whiskies are currently available only from the Scotch Whisky Experience's shop on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, next to Edinburgh Castle or online at www.scotchwhiskyshop.co.uk.

The 58yo Dalmore Selene was created using Casks 1781 and 1782 which were both filled on the same day, 7th June 1951. Just 30 decanters have been produced containing this celestial single Highland malt. The decanters are made from the finest Portuguese mouth blown crystal with hand-cut silver detail. The name Selene comes from the Titan goddess of the moon - a shining example of all things tasteful, beautiful and divine, all of which are characteristics found in this rare single Highland malt. The Selene retails at £12,000.

Tasting notes: Lime, mandarin and grapefruit with hints of bergamot laced with thick plumy treacle, aged Matusalem sherry, ginger and spice

The 50yo Dalmore Candela is named after the international unit for the measurement of the intensity of light. It defines brilliance. Whyte and Mackay, the owners of Dalmore, believe that the Candela is one of their brightest creations yet. Selected from the oldest maturing stocks of any single Highland malt whisky, with spirit dating from 1868, 1878, 1909, 1922, 1939 and 1951, the Candela is set to become one of the most sought after expressions the world has ever seen. Only 77 incomparable Candela decanters will be available worldwide. Each decanter has been patiently hand decorated with a solid silver starburst design, symbolising the unique embodiment of light held within the crystal walls of the accompanying hand crafted case. The 50 Dalmore Candela retails at £7500.

Tasting notes: Initial aroma of sultanas, ground coffee, chocolate praline and spicy orange. Next comes apple, honeyed marzipan, sweet molasses and morello cherries before whispers of caraway and Madeira cake.

Richard Paterson, Master Distiller from Whyte and Mackay and director of The Scotch Whisky Experience said: "These are rare diamonds that have been unearthed and for the luckiest recipient this golden nectar will remain immortal on their taste buds forever."

Susan Morrison, Director and General Manager, The Scotch Whisky Experience commented: "It is always a privilege to be the first to receive such exclusive and prestigious whiskies - they are creating a real buzz of excitement in our shop.  Our visitors can marvel at some incredible gems in the World's Largest Collection of Scotch Whisky as part of our tour and now they can also purchase one of the most highly regarded and unique whiskies ever bottled."

Tasting notes

The Dalmore Selene tasting notes: Lime, mandarin and grapefruit with hints of bergamot laced with thick plumy treacle, aged Matusalem sherry, ginger and spice all combine to captivate the sense.

Holding the spirit long in the mouth is the key to unlocking its many secrets. Tangy, thick cut marmalade, roasted coffee beans, spiced ground cinnamon and chocolate cake, are soon complemented by marinated plums, apricots and mangos soaked in Port wine and dark muscovado sugar.

The Dalmore Candela tasting notes: "Provocative and alluring, with the initial aroma of sultanas, ground coffee, chocolate praline and spicy orange. Next comes apple, honeyed marzipan, sweet molasses and morello cherries before whispers of caraway and Madeira cake complete the experience. This is your chance to taste perfection, so savour it well.
Hold the spirit on the tongue to release first the flavours of ginger cake, spiced toffee, butterscotch and then coffee amaretto, roasted coffee followed with tropical fruits of guava and melon. Thick cut marmalade and citrus fruits, which are the hallmark of this classic malt, will linger seductively in the background throughout." Richard Paterson, Master Distiller, Whyte and Mackay.
