Distilleries near Glasgow

Glengoyne Distillery near Glasgow.jpg

Glasgow is Scotland's largest city and sits on the river Clyde in the West of Scotland, 47 miles drive from the Edinburgh (trains leave from Glasgow Queens Street station to Edinburgh Waverley every 15 minutes during the working week).  Like the capital it has a long historical association with the Scotch Whisky industry.  However the city today can only boast of grain Whisky distilleries within its limits (Port Dundas and Strathclyde distilleries), neither of which is open to the public.  A combined visit to the nearest Single Malt distilleries requires a short trip from Glasgow, but enables the visitor the excellent opportunity of experiencing both a Lowland and Highland malt whisky distillery in a single day.

Auchentoshan Lowland Single Malt distillery

Auchentoshan distillery is situated in Clydebank to the North West of Glasgow city centre.  It is one of the only three remaining lowland malt distilleries in Scotland, and is famed for its triple distilling process - normally more associated in the production of Irish Whiskey. The distillery is a 10 miles drive from the city centre which takes about 20 minutes.  It is situated just off the A82 (known as Great Western Road, which heads towards Loch Lomond).

To travel to the distillery by public transport take the number 66 bus from Glasgow city centre to its last stop (Mountblow). From the bus stop walk towards the dual carriageway, after about 200 yards turn left into Auchentoshan.  Alternatively the nearest train station is Kilpatrick which is served by trains from Glasgow Queen Street station. The distillery is a short taxi journey away.

If you wish to extend your day, Loch Lomond is short car drive north of the distillery and from the Loch Lomond Shores complex in Balloch. Boat trips regularly take visitors tours of the Loch, Scotland?s second biggest after Loch Ness.

Glengoyne Highland Single Malt distillery

19 miles from Glasgow city centre - a 30 minute drive- amongst the Campsie hills is Glengoyne malt distillery. The distillery was established on its present location in 1883 and has flourished ever since.  For those walking the famous West Highland Way, Glengoyne often offers a pleasant distraction.

The distillery is on the A81 road between the villages of Strathblane and Killearn.

To travel to the distillery by public transport take the number 10 bus from Buchanan bus station, in the centre of Glasgow. If you let the driver know that you would like to get off at Glengoyne Distillery, the driver will stop at the distillery gates. The bus leaves from stance 34 at Buchanan Bus station (approx every hour) and the journey takes 45-50 minutes
